How Olivetti Designed the First Personal Computer in History, the Programma 101 (1965)

In case you had been to return throughout an Olivetti Professionalgramma 101, you probably wouldn’t recognize it as a computer. With its 36 keys and its paper-strip printer, it will strike you as some more or less oversized including gadget, albeit an unusually handsome one. However then, you’d be expecting that quality from Olivetti, a compathe big apple best possible remembered for its enormously successful sortwriters that now occupy top area in museums of twentieth-century design. Amongst its much lesser-known products, a minimum of outaspect its local Italy, are its computers, a line that started with majorframes within the mid-nineteen-fifties and finished with IBM PC clones within the nineties, achieveing the peak of its innovation with the Professionalgramma 101 in 1965.

The Professionalgramma 101 is sometimes called the P101 or the In step withottina, a reputation derived from that of its inventor, engineer Pier Giorgio In step withotto. “I dreamed of a chumly gadget to which that you must delegate all the ones menial duties which can be at risk of mistakes,” he later stated, “a gadget that would quietly be informed and in step withshape duties, that would retailer simple information and instructions, that may be utilized by anyone, that will be inexpensive and the scale of other workplace products which people used.”

To actualize that imaginative and prescient required now not only a technical effort but in addition an aesthetic one, which fell to the younger architect and industrial designer Mario Bellini, who had followed his colleague (and later Memphis Staff founder) Ettore Sottsass into consulting paintings for Olivetti.

All this paintings happened at a time of crisis for the compathe big apple. Following the demise of its head Adriano Olivetti in 1960, writes Opinionated Designer, it “were given into serious financial difficulties after purchaseing the enormous US Belowpicket compathe big apple, and the electronics division used to be bought off to General Electric early in 1965.” Olivetti’s son Roberto had already “given the go-ahead in 1962 for the development of a small ‘desk-top’ computer.” So as “to steer clear of their challenge being swallowed up by way of GE, Perotto’s group modified probably the most specifications of the 101 to make it seem to be a ‘calcul. a.tor’ slightly than a ‘computer’ which supposed the challenge may stick with Olivetti.” But on a technical level, the In step withottina remained very a lot a computer certainly.

In addition to subtraction, multiplication, and division, “it will additionally in step withshape logical operations, conditional and unconditional jumps, and print the information saved in a register, all over a custom-made alphanumeric professionalgramming language,” writes Ricautomobiledo Bianchini at Inexhibit. In the video above, enthusiast Wladimir Zaniewski demonstrates its capabilities with a simple alphanumeric lunar-lander sport: a historically apt challenge, since NASA purchased ten of them to be used in planning the Apollo 11 moon landing. But much more important used to be the software’s comparatively down-to-earth succeed inment of being, in Bianchini’s phrases, “an unintimidating object eachone may use, even at house. In that sense, there is not any doubt that the Olivetti Professionalgramma 101 truly is the primary in step withsonal computer in history.”
